Make 4th Grade Division Practice Fast, Fun, and Competitive

Remainders arrive in fourth grade, and with them the first arithmetic whose answer needs interpreting rather than just calculating: whether to round up, round down or report what is left over depends entirely on what the question is about. Factors and multiples start here too, and both lean directly on secure tables.

Fourth grade extends the tables to 12 × 12 and puts them to work — multi-digit multiplication, division with remainders, factors and multiples, and the first serious fraction work. Fractions are where the year is won or lost, and they lean directly on multiplication: finding common denominators is a times-table exercise wearing a disguise.

4th graders are expected to divide with remainders and find the factors and multiples of a number; after that comes division with remainders, factors and multiples.

Watch for discarding the remainder instead of interpreting what it means in the problem.
