Fun First Grade Arithmetic Practice Kids Can Play Together

Early mental math is less about arithmetic than about number sense — knowing that 7 and 3 make 10, that 20 is two tens, that adding and subtracting undo each other. Those relationships are what let a child calculate rather than count, and they are built by frequent short practice rather than by longer sessions.

First grade is where numbers stop being a recitation and become quantities that can be taken apart. The year's real targets are addition and subtraction within 20, number bonds to 10, and reading two-digit numbers as tens and ones. Progress is easiest to see in how a child answers rather than whether they are right: counting every object is early, counting on from the larger number is progress, and answering without counting is fluency.

1st graders are expected to move between adding and subtracting fluently within 20; after that comes number bonds and the link between adding and subtracting.
