How to play & why it works

This is the real Times Tables game from the MathIt app, running in your browser. Each round shows a multiplication or division fact — 5 × 2, 7 × 8, 36 ÷ 6 — and you answer on the number pad as fast as you can. Correct answers advance you to the next round; the goal is a clean, fast run.

Times tables are the single highest-leverage math skill in elementary school: they unlock long multiplication, division, fractions and mental math. The most effective way to learn them is short, frequent retrieval practice — exactly what this game delivers in rounds that take under a minute.

Start with the facts up to 5 × 5, then work up to the full 10 × 10 (and 12 × 12) grid. If a fact keeps tripping you up, say it out loud as a fact family — 7 × 8 = 56, 8 × 7 = 56, 56 ÷ 7 = 8 — and it will stick faster.

The facts people stumble on are remarkably consistent: 6 × 7, 7 × 8, 8 × 9 and anything times 12. Everything else is usually already automatic by the time a child reaches fourth grade. If a run keeps breaking on the same three or four facts, that is the whole homework list — drill those, not the full grid.

A useful benchmark: a fluent third or fourth grader answers a single-digit fact in under three seconds without counting up. Slower than that and the fact is being reconstructed rather than recalled, which is what makes long multiplication and fraction work feel exhausting later. Short daily runs beat one long session, because recall is built by frequency, not duration.

Frequently asked questions

Which times tables should we learn first?

Start with 2, 5 and 10 — their patterns are visible, so they build confidence fast. Then 3, 4 and 6, then the doubles-of-doubles route to 8. Leave 7 and 12 for last; they have the fewest patterns and are the ones most children find hardest.

Is it better to learn times tables in order or mixed up?

Both, in that order. Learning a table in sequence teaches the pattern; answering mixed facts teaches recall. A child who can only recite the 7s from the start has not learned them yet — this game shuffles facts deliberately for that reason.

Does this game include division too?

Yes. Rounds mix multiplication with the matching division facts, so 7 × 8 = 56 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8 get practised together. Learning them as one fact family roughly halves the memorisation load.
