How to play & why it works

Two-digit numbers stacked in columns — 34 + 25 — answered digit by digit from the ones column up, exactly as it is written in school workbooks. The game accepts each digit as you type it, so the column procedure itself gets practiced, not just the answer.

The jump from single-digit facts to two-digit column addition is the first time children combine a memorized fact with a procedure. Practicing the format matters: knowing 4 + 5 is not the same skill as knowing where the 9 goes.

Say the columns out loud while you play: "ones first, then tens." When a column sum passes 9, that is regrouping — the next drill in the series handles it head-on. This one builds the clean-column habit that makes carrying feel natural later.

These rounds stay below the carry on purpose. Column addition asks a child to do two things — follow the ones-then-tens procedure, and recall the facts inside each column. Introducing regrouping before the procedure is automatic means both break at once, and the child cannot tell which part went wrong.

Working right to left feels arbitrary to children who read left to right, and many will try to start with the tens. It is worth explaining once that the ones column is done first because it is the column that can overflow into the next one.
