Division at this stage is sharing: twelve counters dealt fairly between three people leaves four each. Keeping it concrete matters, because the abstract notation arrives before the idea is secure for many children. Halving is the useful bridge — it is division by two wearing a friendlier name.
Second grade is the written-method year. Column addition and subtraction arrive, then regrouping, and with them the first arithmetic that has a procedure to follow rather than a fact to recall. Children who still lack instant facts within 20 find this year disproportionately hard, because they are running a procedure and reconstructing facts at the same time.
2nd graders are expected to divide using the 2, 5 and 10 tables, understanding division as the inverse of multiplication; after that comes division as the inverse of the 2, 5 and 10 tables.
Watch for reversing the question and computing the divisor rather than the quotient.
