Practising for speed, not just accuracy

Most students who struggle on timed tests can already do the arithmetic — they run out of time because each fact is being worked out rather than recalled. That is a different problem from not knowing the math, and it needs a different fix: short timed retrieval practice, which is uncomfortable at first and is exactly what makes it effective.

Third grade should learn division facts alongside the matching times tables rather than after them. A child who knows 8 × 7 = 56 already knows 56 ÷ 7, provided someone has shown that these are one fact. Taught separately, the division facts get memorised twice, and the second copy is always the weaker one.

Why do I run out of time on math tests?
Usually because basic facts are being reconstructed rather than recalled. Every three-second fact inside a longer problem costs you time and attention. Timed drilling of the facts themselves is what closes that gap.
What is the fastest way to learn division facts?
Learn them as the times tables in reverse. For 42 ÷ 6, think "6 times what is 42?" rather than sharing 42 out. Practising 7 × 8 = 56 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8 together roughly halves the memorisation load.
