Practising together

The most useful thing a parent can do during practice is not to help but to play — answering their own questions alongside, at their own difficulty. It takes the spotlight off the child, and it makes the whole thing a shared activity rather than a supervised test. Keep it short and stop while it is still fun.

Third grade has all four operations available at small numbers, which makes random mixed practice possible for the first time. The useful difficulty is choosing: deciding what a question asks before answering it. Word problems fail here not on arithmetic but on picking an operation from a keyword rather than from the situation.

Should I help my child during math practice?
Sparingly. Jumping in the moment they hesitate prevents the retrieval that builds recall. Wait through the pause, and if they are stuck, give the strategy rather than the answer — "what makes ten?" rather than "it's three".
Is mixed practice better than practising one operation at a time?
Both have a use. Practising one operation builds the facts; mixing them builds the habit of reading the problem before answering, which is what breaks down in word problems and on tests. Use single-operation practice to fix a gap and mixed practice to keep it.
