The tables are now infrastructure rather than the lesson. They carry long multiplication, factoring, simplifying fractions and finding common denominators, and a student who is still deriving 7 × 8 pays that cost on every line of a longer problem. Squares past 12 are the gap worth closing here — 13² to 20² appear constantly in area and algebra work and nobody ever drills them.
Sixth grade is the bridge into algebra. Ratios and proportions, negative numbers, one-step equations and expressions with unknowns all arrive, and every one of them assumes fluent arithmetic underneath. A student solving 3x = 21 has to see 21 ÷ 3 instantly, or the algebra gets buried under the calculation.
6th graders are expected to multiply fractions and negatives, and handle multiplication with variables; after that comes multiplication with fractions, negatives and variables.
Watch for dropping a negative sign when multiplying two negatives.
