Arithmetic Mental Math Multiplication

Multiplication in 5th grade

The tables are now infrastructure rather than the lesson. They carry long multiplication, factoring, simplifying fractions and finding common denominators, and a student who is still deriving 7 × 8 pays that cost on every line of a longer problem. Squares past 12 are the gap worth closing here — 13² to 20² appear constantly in area and algebra work and nobody ever drills them.

Fifth grade moves from whole numbers to the rest of the number system: fractions with unlike denominators, decimals, percentages, and order of operations. Percentages are where arithmetic becomes visibly useful outside school, and the students who cope best are the ones whose basic facts are automatic enough to leave attention for the new structure.

5th graders are expected to multiply multi-digit numbers and decimals, and use factors to simplify fractions; after that comes multi-digit multiplication and multiplying decimals.

Watch for miscounting decimal places in the product.
