Multiplication in 2nd grade

Second grade takes the 2, 5 and 10 tables, the three with the clearest patterns, and connects them to arrays. Reading a 3-by-4 grid as both 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 is what makes commutativity obvious rather than a rule to memorise, and it roughly halves how many separate facts the tables actually contain.

Second grade is the written-method year. Column addition and subtraction arrive, then regrouping, and with them the first arithmetic that has a procedure to follow rather than a fact to recall. Children who still lack instant facts within 20 find this year disproportionately hard, because they are running a procedure and reconstructing facts at the same time.

2nd graders are expected to know the 2, 5 and 10 tables and read an array as a multiplication; after that comes the 2, 5 and 10 tables, and multiplication as repeated addition.

Watch for reciting a table correctly in order but being unable to answer a fact out of sequence.
