Second grade can mix addition and subtraction within 100, and the point of mixing is the reading. When every question uses one operation a child can switch off and apply a procedure; when it changes each round, they have to look at the sign first. Habitually carrying the previous question's operation forward is the error to watch.
Second grade is the written-method year. Column addition and subtraction arrive, then regrouping, and with them the first arithmetic that has a procedure to follow rather than a fact to recall. Children who still lack instant facts within 20 find this year disproportionately hard, because they are running a procedure and reconstructing facts at the same time.
2nd graders are expected to mix addition and subtraction within 100 and choose the right operation for a problem; after that comes mixed addition and subtraction within 100.
Watch for reading the sign too quickly and adding when the problem says subtract.
