Addition Subtraction Mental Math

Multiplication in 2nd grade

Multiplication starts as repeated addition and skip counting: 4 × 3 is four groups of three, and counting 3, 6, 9, 12 is a legitimate way to get there. Doubles come first and are worth drilling on their own, because doubling is multiplying by two and doubling twice is multiplying by four — a large slice of the tables arrives free.

Second grade is the written-method year. Column addition and subtraction arrive, then regrouping, and with them the first arithmetic that has a procedure to follow rather than a fact to recall. Children who still lack instant facts within 20 find this year disproportionately hard, because they are running a procedure and reconstructing facts at the same time.

2nd graders are expected to know the 2, 5 and 10 tables and read an array as a multiplication; after that comes the 2, 5 and 10 tables, and multiplication as repeated addition.

Watch for reciting a table correctly in order but being unable to answer a fact out of sequence.

Which multiplication facts are hardest to learn?

6 × 7, 7 × 8, 8 × 9 and the 12s, consistently. They have the fewest patterns to lean on. If practice keeps failing on the same handful of facts, drill those rather than reciting whole tables.

What multiplication should a 2nd grader know?

Enough to know the 2, 5 and 10 tables and read an array as a multiplication.
