Challenge Friends in Fast-Paced Multiplication Battles

A live opponent changes the incentive. Practising alone, there is nothing stopping a child from slowing down, guessing, or quietly stopping; with someone answering the same question at the same time, speed matters and attention holds. Scoring the first two correct answers rather than only the fastest keeps more players in the round after the opening seconds.

This is the band where the tables have to become automatic, and the facts children stumble on are remarkably consistent: 6 × 7, 7 × 8, 8 × 9 and anything times 12. Everything else is usually already fluent. If practice keeps breaking on the same three or four facts, those are the whole homework list — a fluent answer takes under three seconds and involves no counting up.
