Sixth grade mixes negatives with several operations at once, and signs are what get lost. The useful skills are strategic rather than computational: estimating before calculating, halving and doubling to simplify, and knowing roughly what an answer should be. If 47 × 21 should be near 1,000, a result of 9,870 is visibly a mistyped key.
Sixth grade is the bridge into algebra. Ratios and proportions, negative numbers, one-step equations and expressions with unknowns all arrive, and every one of them assumes fluent arithmetic underneath. A student solving 3x = 21 has to see 21 ÷ 3 instantly, or the algebra gets buried under the calculation.
6th graders are expected to work with ratios, negatives and one-step equations; after that comes ratios, negatives and one-step equations.
Watch for losing signs when negatives and several operations appear together.
