Addition in 4th grade

By fourth grade addition is rarely the point of a question; it sits inside multi-step problems and alongside multiplication. The errors move accordingly — misaligned columns when the two numbers have different lengths, and addition performed at the wrong moment in a longer calculation. Accuracy over several steps matters more than speed on any single sum.

Fourth grade extends the tables to 12 × 12 and puts them to work — multi-digit multiplication, division with remainders, factors and multiples, and the first serious fraction work. Fractions are where the year is won or lost, and they lean directly on multiplication: finding common denominators is a times-table exercise wearing a disguise.

4th graders are expected to add multi-digit numbers reliably and recognise addition inside multi-step word problems; after that comes multi-digit addition and adding within word problems.
