Division in 5th grade

Long division in fifth grade is less an arithmetic skill than a procedural one, and it fails where recall fails — each step needs a product produced instantly, or the algorithm gets lost while the student hunts for it. Dividing by a decimal adds the step everyone forgets: shifting the point in both numbers before starting.

Fifth grade moves from whole numbers to the rest of the number system: fractions with unlike denominators, decimals, percentages, and order of operations. Percentages are where arithmetic becomes visibly useful outside school, and the students who cope best are the ones whose basic facts are automatic enough to leave attention for the new structure.

5th graders are expected to carry out long division and divide by a decimal; after that comes long division and dividing by decimals.

Watch for misplacing the decimal point in the quotient.

What is the fastest way to learn division facts?
Learn them as the times tables in reverse. For 42 ÷ 6, think "6 times what is 42?" rather than sharing 42 out. Practising 7 × 8 = 56 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8 together roughly halves the memorisation load.
