Mixed arithmetic in 5th grade

Fifth grade brings percentages, averages and order of operations together, and precedence is where it breaks: working strictly left to right gets the wrong answer often enough to be worth drilling on its own. Anchoring percentages on 10% is the single most useful mental strategy introduced this year.

Fifth grade moves from whole numbers to the rest of the number system: fractions with unlike denominators, decimals, percentages, and order of operations. Percentages are where arithmetic becomes visibly useful outside school, and the students who cope best are the ones whose basic facts are automatic enough to leave attention for the new structure.
