Division in 3rd grade

Division facts are the times tables read backwards, not a separate body of knowledge. A child who knows 8 × 7 = 56 already knows 56 ÷ 7, provided they have been shown those are the same fact. Because of that, division exposes shaky tables immediately, which makes it a useful diagnostic as well as a skill.

Third grade belongs to the times tables. Multiplication and division are introduced together, area and arrays give them a picture, and rounding to the nearest ten and hundred begins. It is the highest-leverage year in elementary arithmetic: the tables learned here carry fractions, long multiplication and mental math for the rest of school, and gaps left now surface for years.

3rd graders are expected to recall division facts alongside the matching times tables to 10 × 10; after that comes division facts alongside the matching times tables.

Watch for treating division facts as separate from the times tables and trying to memorise them twice.

What is the fastest way to learn division facts?

Learn them as the times tables in reverse. For 42 ÷ 6, think "6 times what is 42?" rather than sharing 42 out. Practising 7 × 8 = 56 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8 together roughly halves the memorisation load.

What division should a 3rd grader know?

Enough to recall division facts alongside the matching times tables to 10 × 10.
