Addition in 4th grade

By this point single-digit facts should be automatic and the work moves to the written column method with carrying. Errors here are usually procedural rather than arithmetic: the carried digit is written small, above the next column, and it is the thing most often forgotten once attention moves on. Saying the carry aloud as it is written fixes most of them.

Fourth grade extends the tables to 12 × 12 and puts them to work — multi-digit multiplication, division with remainders, factors and multiples, and the first serious fraction work. Fractions are where the year is won or lost, and they lean directly on multiplication: finding common denominators is a times-table exercise wearing a disguise.

4th graders are expected to add multi-digit numbers reliably and recognise addition inside multi-step word problems; after that comes multi-digit addition and adding within word problems.

Watch for misaligning the columns when the two numbers have different digit counts.
