Fourth grade combines operations on multi-digit numbers, and estimation stops being optional. A student who answers without a rough expectation has no way to notice a result that is wildly wrong — and at this size, errors are large rather than subtle. Estimating first is a habit that pays for itself immediately.
Fourth grade extends the tables to 12 × 12 and puts them to work — multi-digit multiplication, division with remainders, factors and multiples, and the first serious fraction work. Fractions are where the year is won or lost, and they lean directly on multiplication: finding common denominators is a times-table exercise wearing a disguise.
4th graders are expected to combine operations on multi-digit numbers and estimate before calculating; after that comes mixed operations with multi-digit numbers, and estimation.
Watch for answering without estimating first, so a wildly wrong result goes unnoticed.
