Multiplication in 4th grade

Fourth grade extends to 12 × 12 and puts the tables to work in two-digit multiplication, where the placeholder zero on the second row is the classic casualty. The gap is remarkably consistent: 6 × 7, 7 × 8, 8 × 9 and the twelves. If practice keeps failing on the same handful, those facts are the entire homework list.

Fractions are where the year is won or lost, and they lean directly on multiplication: finding common denominators is a times-table exercise wearing a disguise.

4th graders are expected to recall the tables to 12 × 12 and multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number; after that comes tables to 12 × 12, then two-digit by one-digit multiplication.
