Multiplication in 3rd grade

Third grade is the highest-leverage year in elementary arithmetic, and the target is the full grid to 10 × 10 answered in any order. Reciting a table in sequence is not the same skill: a child who can chant the sevens but cannot answer 7 × 6 cold has memorised a song, not a set of facts. Mixed practice is what exposes the difference.

Third grade belongs to the times tables. Multiplication and division are introduced together, area and arrays give them a picture, and rounding to the nearest ten and hundred begins. It is the highest-leverage year in elementary arithmetic: the tables learned here carry fractions, long multiplication and mental math for the rest of school, and gaps left now surface for years.

3rd graders are expected to recall the tables to 10 × 10 in any order, not only by reciting them in sequence; after that comes the full grid to 10 × 10, mixed rather than recited in order.

Watch for the small cluster of 6 × 7, 7 × 8 and 8 × 9, which almost always accounts for the gap.
