What arithmetic practice does and does not build

Fact drilling builds retrieval speed and frees working memory. It does not, on its own, build reasoning, problem-solving or the ability to model a situation mathematically — those need problems, not drills. The useful framing is that fluency removes an obstacle to thinking rather than being the thinking itself.

Mixed practice is harder than it looks, and usefully so. When every question is addition, a child can switch off and apply one procedure; when the operation changes each round, they have to read the problem first.
