At this level the useful skills are strategy and estimation: anchoring percentages on 10%, halving and doubling to simplify, and knowing roughly what an answer should be before calculating it. Estimation is the check on everything else — if 47 × 21 should be around 1,000, a result of 9,870 is visibly a mistyped keystroke.
Sixth grade is the bridge into algebra. Ratios and proportions, negative numbers, one-step equations and expressions with unknowns all arrive, and every one of them assumes fluent arithmetic underneath. A student solving 3x = 21 has to see 21 ÷ 3 instantly, or the algebra gets buried under the calculation.
