How to play & why it works

Each round shows a number and asks you to round it — to the nearest ten or hundred. Type the rounded value on the number pad and the next number appears. A clean run is eight correct rounds.

Rounding is the gateway to estimation: a child who can round 347 to 350 or 300 instantly can sanity-check any sum, difference or product before computing it. That habit — estimate first, calculate second — is what separates confident math students from calculator-dependent ones.

The rule to internalize: look at the digit one place below the one you are rounding to. Five or more rounds up, four or less keeps the digit. The tricky cases are the ones this drill keeps serving — numbers ending in 5, and numbers where rounding carries over (like 297 to the nearest ten).

Almost every rounding error traces to one habit: looking at the wrong digit. To round to the nearest ten you look at the ones; to the nearest hundred you look at the tens. Children who scan the whole number instead of the one digit that decides it get inconsistent answers and cannot say why.

The other sticking point is the boundary. 45 rounds up to 50 by convention, not by logic — it sits exactly halfway, and the rule to round up is an agreement, not a truth. Saying that out loud usually settles the argument faster than repeating the rule.

What grade do children learn rounding?

Rounding to the nearest ten typically arrives in second or third grade, and to the nearest hundred and thousand in third and fourth. It is normally taught right after place value, because it depends on it entirely.

What is the easiest way to teach rounding?

Underline the digit you are rounding to, then look only at the one immediately to its right: 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less rounds down. Reducing it to two digits stops children being distracted by the rest of the number.

Why does rounding matter if calculators exist?

Because it is how you catch a wrong answer. If 47 × 21 should be roughly 50 × 20 = 1,000, then a calculator reading of 9,870 is visibly a mistyped keystroke. Estimation is the check on every other calculation.
